Family Hike at the Monrovia Canyon Park

Monday, May 04, 2009

The kids managed another family hike at the Monrovia Canyon Park last weekend. It was a nice day, cool in the shade but nice and warm in the sun. There were several families with little kids, and many brought their dogs. We had lunch at the picnic area and then began with our hike.

Even if there were some minor complaints of being tired going uphill (the kids, not me :-) ), the hike was generally easy for the kids except for a few narrow paths going up the mountain. Zach was a little apprehensive on those parts. The walk was pretty and there were lots of trees and shade, which is so much different from the dry places we've hiked on before. At the end of the hike was a 30 ft. waterfall which the kids really liked. They played at the stream at the bottom of the falls and we stayed there for some time before we headed down.

On our way down, Zach kept on skidding down the dirt road and I told him that it might help to do little steps. So when we had to go through another narrow path down, he'll say out loud, "Not again! Little steps, little steps, little steps...", trying to psych himself up. Poor guy! I was holding him the whole time though and I knew he was relieved when the narrow paths were over.

Alex and Zach saw many interesting things which they all refer to as "nature". They saw blue dragonflies, beautiful butterflies, and they caught two ladybugs. We saw a small snake on our way down, and even mule deer on our drive home.

Below are the photos of our hike. You may click on each photo to enlarge.
