Bug Festival 2010

Friday, June 18, 2010

Both kids are still into bugs and so the bug festival at the LA Natural History Museum is still an event we just can't miss. I swear these two have gotten to be more curious and daring than last year.  They are no longer as apprehensive in holding the bugs.

Zach was surprised at how hard this bug's body was.

Zach saw a tarantula and started to fall in line to get a chance to hold it.  I think he must have seen me cringe at the sight of that big hairy spider, because he changed his mind and got out of the line.  Part of me wished he didn't see my reaction, but part of me was relieved that he decided not to hold the spider.

David held the tarantula instead.

We thought we should give it another try and buy caterpillars.  Our caterpillars last year didn't make it long enough to build a cocoon.  This time, we saw the caterpillars disappear in their cocoons.  And then after a few weeks, they became butterflies.  The kids were in awe to witness the whole process, like they were not really convinced it will turn into a butterfly.  I didn't expect so much reaction, almost like it was magic!
